[Suggestion] More (and better) colonist names.

CASUALTY REPORT

Subject: Baker
Age: 36

Cause of Death: Starvation

My reaction: Bollocks!... WHICH "BAKER"?!?!?!!!???

Or Smith, or Brown or Lee

Firstly...

Could colonists names be more obviously unique? Rather than just "technically unique".
Either by adding full forenames or by adding more surnames to the pool.
tbh, Since the game currently doesn't use initials in many places - I'd think I'd prefer initials to be removed entirely.

Which leads neatly into....

Secondly...

Could we have more names?

Starting missions with "A. Henderson", "X. Lee", "B. Lee" and "C. Lee" is just an accident waiting to happen.
Especially when they are joined by "F. Lee" and "M. Lee" from the lander.

Thirdly...

When something happens to a colonist, could the emails let us know WHICH one it happened to? Right now, it's surname only -- when surnames aren't unique (or even uncommon).
I've suggested in another post that perhaps we need a "go to sender/colonist" type button attached to emails.
But including their full name would be handy. Or have enough unique surnames that there's no chance for confusing one colonist "Smith" with another colonist "Smith".

Final thoughts...

I think I'd just prefer surnames and no initial. Colonist Baker makes more sense to me thematically than Colonist K. Baker or Colonist Keith Baker.
But I can see advantages to full names too. You could get emails with "From: Suzanne Taylor" in the header and if she's in a good mood she could sign it "Suzanne" and if she's in a bad mood she could sign it "Colonist Taylor".

As a side note... I wonder how much testing there has been with longer names. Can we expect "Christopher Wilmington-Smythe" to cause problems anywhere?

Regardless... less of this...

In an attempt to /bump without actually /bump'ing and aiming to make life easier... I've searched for some of the most common surnames, from the UK, Europe and other English speaking countries.

It should be a big enough list to be unique most of the time. :)

I just went through the "Top 100 Surnames" type lists on websites for countries in Western Europe and picked out the names that were familiar to me. I think I may have dipped into USA, Canada and Mexico too.
While working through each list, I excluding those names which I thought were difficult for me to pronounce or type

I've no doubt it's an incomplete list or out of date. There are obviously familiar names which are missing, mainly because they aren't in common use (or I chose to ignore them or I miss read them or I got distracted or....)

Mainly though, it was just a list I hoped could just be cut and paste to provide a lot more variety within the game - hopefully with names that would be readily familiar to the majority of target audience.
A "I put a bit of time into this, so you didn't need to" quick fix to bases with 3 Smiths, 2 Lees and 7 Jones.

Was commenting on the fact that a couple of the names match ones used in Star Trek TNG and Buffy the Vampire Slayer...
Not criticising or anything, just thought it was amusing that the names used are real names.

Regards Brad

ah ha.

I got the TNG reference. But not the Buffy one. (which I should have, I watched enough of them). :D
My reply was a bit too dry though. Too much explanation, not enough fun.

Reason for lack of names is the Kickstarter backers' names are going in soon. I did add a few more a month or so back, but don't want to add too many until the KS loading system is in. (Over 4000 name combinations)
