Lock to grid (One for our OCD users)

Post by SimoRoth » Thu Mar 07, 2013 1:01 pm

A feature that a lot of people have be asking for after seeing demo's/testing the game was a "snap to grid" system for placing objects.

By pressing control, the placement snaps to a 1 metre grid. The object's rotation also locks to 90 degree increments.

I assumed it was going to be the default... ? I hope there will be an option, and pressing a key will release an object from the grid. Sort of like Always Run feature works in FPS games.

This feature may also help players saving space in rooms. I don't know if this is going to be an issue, like you have to be efficient in the way your organize machines and furniture in order to not build more rooms, in order to save "money". But in any case this is a cool feature. I'm one of thoses OCD users :)

I prefer free placement over having a default "on a grid" setting. Most items are one-offs and none are particularly square.

Nobody asked what the things in the picture are. ;)

So objects you place in your colony are probably not of the uniform size ? Or rather, aren't small multiples of the same (relatively big) number ? No 2x3 and 4x9 objects, but 13x7 and 5x2.3 ?

The machines are transmogrifiers.

I'm going to guess they're either power generators or air purifiers.

b0rsuk: Some objects are round, triangular etc. Everything is free form, not making any changes to stuff for the sake of simplifying the base construction.
air purifiers.
Yup. The things in the shot are O2 Generators / CO2 scrubbers. You'll need them to maintain breathable atmosphere in the game and to make rooms habitable after breaches.

I was hoping they were for making homebrew. Guess colonists will have to go for the old marmite in a space-sock.
