Meteor impact craters

Meteor impact craters... You'll be seeing lots of these!

They are 3d, so cast and receive shadows. Could of made decal's, but I feel the extra rendering cost makes them look much better.

Also fixed the blocky shadows we got in the Linux alpha. ;)

Looking very nice. I look forward to seeing my colonists die a meteor induced death.

I think the change is too abrupt. It looks like someone dropped a cannonball from a tower, and some gremlins stole it. I would expect more dust, dirt, debris and burns. But it's a good start.

Very nice!

Maybe you can add some more random eclipse 'C' shapes in stead of near perfect 'O' shaped craters? That would imply different directions in stead of strait down drops.

Those shadows.... *drool*

While they look very nice, I would indeed have it fade better into the terrain.

Yes. Would prefer if the crater wasn't perfectly hemi-spherical. Meteors are not cannon balls. Also the way you appear to have done them is o raise a section of ground then impress the crater unto that raised section? It looks very odd, very... uncanny valley.

Yeah, it does look rather like a medieval battlefield. :) Looking at pictures on Google, tue impact craters seem to often be more square than round, with less of the ridge and a more gradual spread. Your craters are doing no damage to the surrounding area.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blast_wave - When a bomb goes off, the negative pressure can kill and damage, even if you're not hit by the bomb.

These seem like quite useful images too:

Yeah these are just the first few tests. Will hopefully have a lot more generated from different angles when we have the time to put them together.
