Could people with the black squares on the edge of their screen try out this exe and see if they go away?

They didn't go away for me, I'm afraid.

Also, re: the context sensitive thing, I personally find it quite disorienting that, when I want to place lights in my rooms it jumps back to the start of the item list. I think I would prefer it, if the item selector was locked to the same item (if possible) when changing rooms.

Right, just managed to get it to happen 3 times, first 2 times with a weather I would classify as "light wind" (outside fully, inside on certain rotations) and the third time happened whilst it was raining and that was there both inside and outside no matter how I turned the camera.

I was just about to post a very similar screenshot. Happened to on both of my testruns so far. The first time after what seemed to be a solar flare, the second time I there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary when it happened. Second time it started to rain right after the color glitch happened, the first time I'm not sure, but I noticed after a while that it was raining.

EDIT: I just had another run, and got much of the same. This time it seemed to color glitch was triggered by a solar flare again. At least I assume that's what it is. The screen starts shaking like there's an earthquake, then there's a very bright yellowish light and a strong blur filter for a few seconds.

Though I don't have exhaustive system details (at work atm), I can confirm that I have had the intense colour bug appear as well, in the same way and under the same circumstances as Osdeath's description (incl. difference in inside/outside behaviour). My card's a Geforce 560Ti with latest drivers, if that helps at all.

So I've only played a little bit but a few things jumped out at me.

-FPS is average at about 4-5, which made testing anything else pretty damn hard
-Saw the intense colour once when I moved the camera to the edge of the map
-Selecting items was incredibly slow and unresponsive, I didn't notice it slowing down my FPS but it couldn't be much slower.
-Selecting items also seemed to have a long list of 'not an item' until something would eventually show up, mostly turrets and doors, I saw a bed once
-Everything looked beautiful, no artefacting or any other graphical bugs of note, I assume the crazy partical blur stuff that occasionally happens outside is deliberate.
-This note is aesthetic rather than technical so not really important, but I couldn't read the info text, especially outside, it didn't stand out nearly enough
-If there was a way to cancel dig orders, I couldn't work it out

-Started up quickly and no issues there (not sure what C++Re-distributable I have, just know it's more recent than 2010)
-Starting screen's FPS was just as bad as the rest of the game however.

Ok that is weird, your system should run the game... I wouldnt expect it to be much over 30fps, but only a few fps on the menu screen is very odd.
