Fossils.

Digging up fossils allows you to research the planet's biology without going onto the hostile surface.

They will be placed stood up and illuminated in your research room and studied by the colonists.

Sometimes digging out a block will reveal a fossil instead of minerals. You will need to do a lot of digging to find all four!

There's only four?! Whoah. What if a bunch of the same animal died in the same area, all those millions or thousands of years ago? What could the player conceivably do with duplicate fossils? Not like they could sell them to passer-by merchants or whatever.

I can only assume we'll unearth a Monolith at some point.

Then one of the discoverers starts acting weird....

Oh man, so many varying sci-fi film tropes to build off of!
